The Prophecy of the Kingdom in Daniel 2

The Four Kingdoms:

The head of gold.......................... Babylon

The breasts and arms of silver.......................... Medo-Persia

The belly and thighs of brass............................ Greece

The legs and feet of iron and clay..................... Rome

The Fifth Kingdom: The Church of Christ

What do we learn from Daniel 2 about the church of Christ?

(a) The church of Christ is not a divided kingdom. – The church cannot be split, it contains no denominations, and it is not itself a denomination.

(b) The church of Christ is not of human origin. – The church is not a “movement” of man, it did not originate from man, it is not “our” church, and no man-made organization can properly be identified with the fifth kingdom in Daniel 2.

(c) The church of Christ was set up by God during the days of the Roman empire. – The church does not trace its origin to the Restoration movement, its “religious heritage” does not begin with Alexander Campbell, and no group of recent origin can properly be identified with the fifth kingdom in Daniel 2.

(d) The church of Christ is powerful and eternal. – The church will outlast and overturn all human organizations. God’s power works through the church.

If we do not consider these terms to be synonyms, then what does that tell us about the “Church of Christ” to which we belong? Is it from God or is it from man?

Discussion Questions: In what ways do we unwittingly portray the church of Christ to the world as being just another denomination? Have some among us created a new denomination called “The Church of Christ”?
